Ever since I was a little girl, I have been a little obsessed with whales. I remember getting the Encyclopedia of Whales picture dictionary for my birthday in elementary school. I loved that book. In fourth grade, I had to give a speech to the entire grade on my favorite whale. I chose the blue whale because it is the largest mammal in the world and I thought that was just cool. I remember taping pieces of paper together until I had 100 feet of paper so I could show my class how long 100 feet really is.
I was watching a recorded episode of Oprah today from last Thursday, Earth Day. It had a segment about dolphins and Japan. Two things I find interesting so I had to watch. This episode was not about the interesting culture of Japan, but about an awful hunting practice in Taiji, Japan. Taiji is not too far from where we live. Probably a 3-4 hour drive. The episode was highlighting an award winning movie called The Cove. Maybe the link won't make you watch the movie, but this picture will definitely make me:
Japan is one of the few countries left in the world that still hunts whales. They say they hunt whales for "scientific" purposes which is a way around the International Whaling Commission rules and then sell the meat to fish markets and restaurants. We've eaten at several sushi restaurants that serve whale. According to the documentary, dolphin meat is often sold as whale meat because both are part of the order cetacea. I told our favorite sushi chef that I refuse to eat whale and he responded with, "What are you? Green Peace?".
Well, I'm not Green Peace, Shin, but I can spread the word about this movie. For those of you in Japan with Japanese friends or students, there is a condensed 15 minute video available on Savejapandolphins.org. It is subtitled in Japanese as well. The above website is also available in Japanese. Take a look.
