It's cherry blossom season in Japan. They announce that spring is here in the most beautiful way and the Japanese don't let this event go unnoticed. Spring vacation for schools in Japan is a 1-2 week break that corresponds exactly with cherry blossom season and since this is their break between school grades, everyone can enjoy the blooms fully.
On Wednesday, I headed to Tokyo with 4 fellow members our my spouses' group to see the blossoms in Shinjuku Gyoen in Tokyo. This huge park is similar to central park in New York, I think. We joined the tens of thousands of people in the park to photograph the blossoms, enjoy the spring show and picnic beneath them. What a wonderful and relaxing way to spend a Wednesday. If only it had been a little sunnier. No complaints here though! It was a great day! The Japanese even have a word for picnicing under the cherry blossoms- Hanami. "Hana" means flower and "mi" is to look or watch. Sounds about right to me!
